Subject:Some technical notes for final projects

1.  Always italicize book titles and put short story titles in double quotation marks:

"Hills Like White Elephants" appears in the collection Men without Women.

2.  How to cite mss and tss from the Kennedy Library:

In-line citation:  In the first draft of the story, Nick is named "Mike" (KL/EH 424, 5).  [Translation:  Kennedy Library/Ernest Hemingway Collection, FILE #424, PAGE 5.]

Works cited:  Hemingway, Ernest.  Untitled manuscript.  Ernest Hemingway Collection, File #424.  John F. Kennedy Library, Boston.  [Translation:  Here, Untitled manuscript could be:  Untitled manuscript, untitled typescript, untitled manuscript fragment, or "Cross-Country Snow" - or whatever the title is on the draft you're looking at.]

3.  If your story has more than one draft:  your first responsibility is going to be to figure out the composition order of the drafts.  The Kennedy File #s DO NOT indicate composition order!!  That's their cataloging system and it indicates nothing whatsoever other than which file # the paper is contained in in their vault.

4.  Remember the pet peeve promise:  If everyone in the class avoids the common errors of "its/it's" transposition, "their/they're/there" transposition, and "possessive/plural" transposition, everyone in the class gets four extra points on the final project.
